Kevin Ware injury: Louisville guard to miss season with medical reshirt

The junior will preserve a year of eligibility by sitting out the rest of the Cardinals’ season with a leg injury.

Louisville wing Kevin Ware will sit out the rest of the season as a medical redshirt, according to Joel Goodman of ESPN. The junior suffered a leg injury when he was kicked in a game against Missouri State. The injury occurred to the same leg that he broke in the NCAA Tournament in 2013.

Ware returned from that gruesome injury in a non-conference game against Cornell, but never fully got up to speed. He was only averaging six minutes in nine games since returning, which paled in comparison to the 16 minutes Ware averaged in a healthy 2012-2013 regular season. Coach Rick Pitino had been considering the medical redshirt option since late December.

Despite logging minutes this year, the NCAA allows players to medical redshirt if they have played less than 30 percent of their team’s games. Ware’s nine games account for just over 29 percent of Louisville’s 31-game regular-season schedule.

The Cardinals are 13-3 on the season, having lost to Memphis on Thursday.
