It looks like Dayton’s stay in the Top 25 will be short-lived. The No. 25 Flyers fell 81-75 at Illinois State on Saturday in a second straight lackluster performance.
Dayton vs. Illinois State final score: Flyers upset on the road
20 points from Daishon Knight gave Illinois State the surprising victory.
After beating Gonzaga and dominating California at the Maui Invitational, Dayton came home and struggled to put away Delaware State, eventually winning by 10.
This time, the Flyers weren't as lucky. Vee Sanford scored 14 points and Jordan Sibert had 13 more to lead Dayton, but it was not enough to overcome 20 from the Redbirds' Daishon Knight and 16 more from Bobby Hunter.
Illinois State never trailed in the first half and took a 39-32 lead into the locker room. The Redbirds maintained the edge for much of the second half until a flurry of threes gave Dayton a brief taste of success. Sibert, Sanford and Khari Price combined for triples on four straight possessions to put Dayton up two with 12:43 to play.
But Illinois State was quick to respond. The Redbirds got the lead back with an 8-0 run and never gave it up again.
With the win, Illinois State is now 5-4, while Dayton falls to 7-2 with the loss.
