VCU did not take its first lead until the 10:43 mark in the second half, when Teddy Okereafor made a layup to put the Rams up, 50-48, capping off a 24-5 run. Xavier's Brad Redford made several 3-pointers over the next few minutes to regain the lead for his team three different times. However, VCU answered each shot with successful possessions of its own.

Troy Daniels led four Rams players in double figures in scoring with 19 points on 7-of-15 shooting, including a 3-pointer with 4:04 left to give VCU a four-point lead, its biggest of the game to that point. Rob Brandenburg added 17 points, and sunk two free throws with 10 seconds remaining, which gave the Rams an important two-possession lead.

Redford scored 15 points on five 3-pointers off the bench for Xavier, while Dee Davis added 15 in the losing effort.
