No. 6 Kansas vs. Iowa State final score: Bill Self earns 500th career victory as Jayhawks win, 108-96, in OT

KU coach Bill Self picked up his 500th career victory in an overtime win over Iowa State, thanks in part to 39 points by Elijah Johnson.

Iowa State's hot three-point shooting cooled off in overtime, and a career game from guard Elijah Johnson helped No. 6 Kansas escape with a 108-96 win on Monday. The win was No. 500 for KU coach Bill Self and snapped Iowa State's 22-game home winning streak.

The Jayhawks led by one at half, but as the second half progressed it looked like the Cyclones were going to pull off the upset. Johnson practically willed Kansas to victory, scoring the Jayhawks’ eight final points and hitting two free throws to force overtime.

Guard Ben McLemore, who hit a three-pointer to force overtime in the teams' first meeting this year, had only seven points. The Jayhawks replaced his offense with Johnson's career game, as he scored 39 points and tallied seven assists.

The game featured a lead change almost every other minute, much of that buoyed by Iowa State’s hot shooting from behind the arc earlier in the game. The Cyclones ended up shooting just 41.5 percent from three-point land, but hit a school record 17 three-pointers.

Senior guard Korie Lucious, who averages 9.7 points, led Iowa State with 23 points. Senior guard Tyrus McGee added 22 points for the Cyclones, hitting six threes in the process.

With the win, the Jayhawks kept pace with Kansas State for the top spot in the Big 12 standings. Iowa State falls to 9-6 in Big 12 play.
