No. 4 Michigan vs. Penn State final score: Nittany Lions with huge upset of Wolverines, 84-78

The highly rated Wolverines struggled in the first half and were hit with a flurry of threes from the Nittany Lions.

USA TODAY Sports

The Penn State Nittany Lions scored a huge 84-78 upset over the No. 4 Michigan Wolverines on Wednesday, giving the team its first win in Big Ten play. The Nittany Lions had lost their 18 previous conference games.

Penn State briefly took a lead against Michigan in the first half, but the Wolverines clamped down and had jumped back in front by the recess. The Nittany Lions weren’t done, though, using a big run of their own in the second half to retake the lead; they would hold on until the final buzzer.

The Wolverines were much more aggressive on the boards, grabbing 14 offensive rebounds compared to just nine for the Nittany Lions. But Penn State took much better care of the basketball, coughing it up just nine times compared to Michigan's 15 turnovers, including six from Trey Burke and five from Nik Stauskas.

Jermaine Marshall led all scorers with 25 points for the Nittany Lions, while Ross Travis ended the night with a double-double, recording 15 points and 12 rebounds. D.J. Newbill knocked down 17 points for the Nittany Lions as well. Tim Hardaway Jr. led the Wolverines in the points column with 19, while Burke knocked down 18 points.
