2013 MAAC tournament results and bracket: Iona, Manhattan advance to Championship Game

The MAAC Tournament hasn’t gone according to plan, as the fourth-seeded Iona Gaels and sixth-seeded Manhattan Jaspers will square off in the championship game on Monday.

USA TODAY Sports

The No. 4 Iona Gaels and No. 6 Manhattan Jaspers advanced to the 2013 MAAC Tournament Championship Game after both teams won semifinal round games on Sunday.

Iona knocked off the top-seeded Niagara Purple Eagles, 79-73, in the early game on the strength of 20 points and 17 rebounds from David Laury. Three other players finished in double digits in scoring for the Gaels, who embarked on a 10-1 run shortly after the midway point of the second half to take a nine-point lead, the largest of the game for either team, with 6:37 remaining.

Manhattan used a dominant second half to cruise to a 60-42 win over the seventh-seeded Fairfield Stags in the nightcap. Emmy Andujar scored 16 points off the bench for the Jaspers, while Michael Alvarado pitched in 12. Manhattan outscored Fairfield, 37-20, after the break and now has a chance to become the second team with a losing record to secure an automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament.

Iona and Manhattan will tip off at 9 p.m. ET on Monday from the MassMutual Center in Springfield, Mass. The game will be televised on ESPN2.
