Summit League tournament 2013 results and bracket: South Dakota and North Dakota battle for the title

It will be a Dakota state showdown for the Summit League as North Dakota State and South Dakota State battle for an automatic berth in the NCAA tournament.

USA TODAY Sports

The Summit League tournament championship will be a showdown between North Dakota State and South Dakota State as the two schools won on Monday night to advance to the finals.

Nate Wolters scored 18 points and doled out 12 assists for the South Dakota State Jackrabbits as they held off 25 points from senior guard Frank Gaines to take down the IPFW Mastodons 72-56.

Gaines averages 19.6 points per game on the year, and the Jackrabbits seemed content with letting him shoot as many times as he wanted to. The Mastodons shot 44 percent from the field, but no other player scored in double figures, with Joe Edwards and Luis Jacobo both scoring seven points to supplement Gaines.

Wolters, on the other hand, had plenty of help in taking down the Mastodons. Junior guard Chad White added 17 points and senior forward Tony Fiegen scored 16 as South Dakota State shot 61.5 percent from the floor.

TrayVonn Wright and Taylor Braun led the third-seeded North Dakota State Bison to an upset of the Western Illinois Leathernecks, 55-43.

Wright led all scorers in the game with 19 points and Braun added 14 points as the Leathernecks couldn’t overcome a poor shooting night, ending any hopes of making the NCAA tournament.

The Dakota state showdown takes place on Tuesday, March 12 at 8 p.m. ET and will be shown on ESPN2.
