Big 12 Tournament 2013 bracket: Kansas and Iowa State advance in second day of tournament

The Big 12 tournament continued on Thursday, and two games are already in the books. The final two quarterfinal games will be played this evening, but first let’s look at the afternoon action.

No. 1 Kansas 91, No. 9 Texas Tech 63

No surprises here. When Kansas is on, the Jayhawks look like title favorites. Freshman phenom Ben McLemore scored 24 points and Bill Self dipped heavily into his bench in the second half. The Jayhawks started the game on a 15-2 run and never looked back. Dejan Kravic scored 20 in the losing effort for the Red Raiders, who finish their season with an 11-19 record and little chance for postseason play.

No. 5 Iowa State 73, No. 4 Oklahoma 66

Melvin Ejim notched a double-double in the Cyclones win, scoring 23 points and grabbing 12 rebounds to propel his squad past Oklahoma. Down 14 late in the first half, Iowa State used a 12-0 run to get back in the game, finally taking the lead with three minutes remaining in the contest. ISU was atypically cold from downtown, hitting just seven of their 26 attempts from behind the arc. But Nebraska was worse, hitting just three of 18. The big advantage was on the boards, where Ejim and the rest of the frontcourt outrebounded the Sooners 41-31. Iowa State will play Kansas in the semifinals Friday, their third meeting this season. The first two matchups went to overtime, with the Jayhawks winning both.

Here’s the rest of Thursday’s Big 12 action:

-No. 2 Kansas State vs. No. 7 Texas (7 p.m. ET, WatchESPN)

-No. 3 Oklahoma State vs. No. 6 Baylor (9:30 p.m. ET, WatchESPN)
