NCAA Tournament 2013 scores: N.C. A&T, St. Mary’s move on to second round

Two of the First Four teams punched their ticket to the round of 64 on Tuesday.

The NCAA Tournament officially began on Tuesday with two First Four games. Four teams played for a spot in the 64-team bracket on Thursday. Despite featuring non-marquee teams and being televised on a channel nobody watches, there was lots of exciting basketball played. Let’s recap the action:

No. 16 North Carolina A&T Aggies 73, No. 16 Liberty Flames 72

The Aggies held off a furious late rally from Liberty to get their first NCAA Tournament win in school history. Jeremy Underwood led with 19 points and Bruce Beckford added 16 as NC A&T shot 51.9 percent from the field. John Caleb Sanders was Liberty's hero in a losing effort, knocking in 21 points and getting nine rebounds.

The Aggies will face No 1 overall seed Louisville in Lexington on Thursday.

No. 11 Saint Mary’s Gaels 67, No. 11 Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders 54

The Blue Raiders didn't do much to bolster their case that they belonged in the tournament, as St. Mary's ran roughshod over them, scoring 45.7 percent of their field goals and knocking down 8 of 14 three pointers. Matthew Dellavedova led the way with 22 points and Stephen Holt wasn't far behind with 18.

The Gaels now travel to San Jose, where they will take on No. 6 Memphis on Thursday.
