March Madness 2013 scores, Middle Tennessee vs. St. Mary’s: Gaels knock off Blue Raiders, 67-54

St. Mary’s advances to the second round after defeating Middle Tennessee in the First Four.

The St. Mary’s Gaels defeated the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders, 67-54, to advance to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

Middle Tennessee was able to keep the game close for most of the first half, but things got out hand later on when St. Mary’s went on a 15-4 run to close out the first half. They went into halftime up 29-20, and the second half was more of the same, with the Gaels maintaining a big lead and never giving the Blue Raiders a chance to catch up. A 7-0 run over a five-minute stretch essentially iced the game.

St. Mary’s finished the night shooting 45.7 percent from the field and made 8-of-14 three-point shots. Middle Tennessee shot 42.3 percent and made just 4-of-12 threes.

Matthew Dellavedova was the star of the night, leading the Gaels with 22 points, while Stephen Holt chipped in with 18 points and six rebounds. Marcos Knight led the Raiders with 16 points and six rebounds.

St. Mary's will move on to face the Memphis Tigers in San Jose on Thursday.
