Michigan vs. VCU score update: Trey Burke leads Wolverines to 38-23 halftime lead

The Wolverines dominated defensively in the first half and kept turnovers at a minimum to build a big lead.

The Michigan Wolverines have jumped out to a 38-23 halftime lead over VCU behind 11 points and three assists from point guard Trey Burke. The Rams' vaunted trapping defense has produced just six turnovers in 35 possessions, while Michigan has locked down VCU's offense.

Michigan’s 17 percent haltime turnover rate is higher than normal, but it is far below the 29 percent VCU has forced on the season. Without easy transition buckets, the Rams have struggled in the halfcourt. VCU posted just a 32 effective field goal percentage and shot only two free throws in the first half, leading to just 0.92 points per possession.

The Wolverines have dominated the interior, hitting on 63 percent of their two-pointers. Things began to click on offense as Michigan built its lead towards the end of the half with the help of a devastating screen from Mitch McGary:

VCU has a long way to come back against a strong Michigan team in the second half. The Rams will need to get more easy baskets in transition or they will be heading home.
