We have our Cinderella team for the 2013 NCAA tournament. The No. 15 Florida Gulf Coast Eagles defeated the No. 7 San Diego St. Aztecs, 81-71, and become the first 15 seed in tournament history to reach the Sweet 16.
March Madness bracket 2013, San Diego State vs. Florida Gulf Coast: Eagles make history, defeat Aztecs 81-71
Florida Gulf Coast becomes the first No. 15 seed to make the Sweet 16 after knocking off San Diego St.
The game was a tight back-and-forth for the first half, with neither team pulling away. San Diego St. went into halftime up 35-34 despite the Eagles’ usual brand of dunking and crazy three point shots that gave them a victory over Georgetown.
Just like that Georgetown game, the second half became the FGCU Show. The Eagles ripped off a 21-5 run to put the Aztecs away, and it was just as dazzling as the last game. San Diego St. gave up 17 turnovers on the game.
Bernard Thompson and Sherwood Brown led FGCU with 23 and 17 points, respectively. Brett Comer was a master on the point, dishing out 14 assists.
With the win, Florida Gulf Coast have solidified their status as this year's loveable underdogs. They will play the Florida Gators next week, and no matter how that game goes, we know the Eagles will be bringing their swag:
