The 2013 NCAA Tournament has been anything but boring. On Sunday, Florida Gulf Coast made history as the Sweet 16 was decided.

Miami edges Illinois in wild finish

Ronald MartinezThe Illini continued to give Miami fits in the second half, using a 15-6 run at the end to take a 54-52 lead with three minutes left. Miami would take the lead back thanks to a clutch 3-pointer from Larkin. A questionable out-of-bounds call gave Miami the ball back with 36 seconds left, and they made their necessary free throws to send the Illini packing.
Miami will go on to play No. 3 Marquette in the Sweet 16 next weekend.

With a loss on a La Salle buzzer-beater, Marshall Henderson’s NCAA Tournament and his season is over.
I believe it was Nate Dogg who once said: “Hey hey hey hey/drain threes every day.”

Jamie SquireHenderson, of course, took more shots than anyone else in the game, and wasn’t very efficient doing it. He was 8-21 from the field and a poor 4-15 from long range. He came up with another huge play with 6:39 left in a tie game and the score tied. Henderson took the ball to the hole and scored, plus the foul, pumping his fists and showing a bit of his legendary enthusiasm.
But the Ole Miss attack wasn’t just Henderson. Murphy Holloway made his presence felt with a double-double of 14 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.

ElsaThe game was a tight back-and-forth for the first half, with neither team pulling away. San Diego St. went into halftime up 35-34 despite the Eagles’ usual brand of dunking and crazy three point shots that gave them a victory over Georgetown.
Just like that Georgetown game, the second half became the FGCU Show. The Eagles ripped off a 21-5 run to put the Aztecs away, and it was just as dazzling as the last game. San Diego St. gave up 17 turnovers on the game.

Florida Gulf Coast’s team name is the Eagles, but they apparently have taken a different bird as their spirit being: the chicken.
That’s Swiss point guard Cristophe Varidel with the strangest celebratory choice since, well, SDSU just five minutes ago.

We already know that Florida Gulf Coast is dunk city. But San Diego State can get up too, and, um.... well, they also know how to celebrate.
FGCU is up by a handful at the under-12 timeout, so, this one could be interesting.

Stephen DunnFlorida started the game red hot, shooting 65.2 percent from the floor and making 7 of 14 three-pointers in the first half to bury Minnesota early. The Gators went into halftime up 48-27, scoring the most first-half points in NCAA Tournament history.
Minnesota mounted a comeback in the second half, pulling within eight points with seven minutes to go, but in the end the early deficit was too much to overcome.

Ouch. Ice and elevation, Chris Babb. Ice and elevation.

USA TODAY SportsThe win sent Wichita State to its first Sweet Sixteen since 2006. This is the 10th NCAA Tournament appearance overall for WSU. The Shockers move on to face the winner of Ole Miss and La Salle. The Shockers allowed Gonzaga to score 1.09 points per possession, but hot shooting allowed them to reach 1.19 PPP themselves.
Gonzaga was participating in its 15th-straight Big Dance since former head coach Dan Monson started the run back in 1999. That year, the Zags reached the Elite Eight as a No. 10 seed. Monson left for Minnesota after that run, leaving Mark Few in charge of the program. The Bulldogs have built the program up since then, but still haven’t matched that original tournament success.

USA TODAY SportsFlorida Gulf Coast stunned No. 2 Georgetown, 78-68, in a game that really wasn’t even that close. The Eagles used a 21-2 run early in the second half to take a 52-33 lead, and kept a double-digit advantage over the Hoyas until a late flurry pulled Georgetown to within four with less than a minute left. FGCU made six-of-10 free throws from that point on, while the Hoyas were unable to come up with a bucket.
Florida Gulf Coast clearly benefited from playing several strong opponents during the non-conference portion of its schedule. The Eagles went 1-3 against those teams, defeating Miami and losing to VCU, Duke and Iowa State. All five teams, including FGCU, made it to the third round of the NCAA Tournament.

USA TODAY SportsThe big question for Illinois is what kind of performance they get from guard Brandon Paul. He had 17 points against Colorado, although he was highly inefficient on the offensive end. When Paul is going right, the Illini can beat just about anyone. Look for Miami’s coaching staff to really key in on Paul; if they can slow him down, the Hurricanes should advance with relative ease.
