Florida Gulf Coast wins 2013 Atlantic Sun Conference basketball tournament by beating Mercer, 88-75

Florida Gulf Coast University will be dancing in just its second year of D-1 postseason eligibility after knocking off Mercer in the Atlantic Sun Conference Championship Game on Saturday.

USA TODAY Sports

The Florida Gulf Coast Eagles defeated the Mercer Bears, 88-75, on Saturday at Hawkins Arena in Macon, Ga., to win the 2013 Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament and secure a spot in the NCAA Tournament.

Brett Comer scored 21 points and dished out five assists to help the Eagles earn their first invitation to the Big Dance in just their second year of Division I postseason eligibility. Sherwood Brown, the 2013 A-Sun player of the year, pitched in 16 points and 11 rebounds.

Florida Gulf Coast will attempt to become the first A-Sun team to win an NCAA Tournament game since 2001, when No. 11 Georgia State defeated No. 6 Wisconsin, 50-49, in a first-round game in Boise, Idaho.

SB Nation bracket expert Chris Dobbertean predicts the A-Sun champions will be the No. 15 seed in this year's NCAA Tournament, and could have a meeting with the nation's eighth-ranked team, the Louisville Cardinals, in the opening round.
