Memphis’ Antonio Barton set to transfer

Antonio Barton is on track to graduate from the University of Memphis this summer and told his teammates on Monday he intends to transfer to a different program for his final year of eligibility.

USA TODAY Sports

The Memphis Tigers announced junior guard Antonio Barton is set to transfer from the basketball program, the Commericial Appeal reported on Monday.

Barton averaged 5.6 points during a season that was cut short by a hairline fracture in his right foot he suffered in a game against the Southern Miss Golden Eagles on Feb. 9.

He missed nine games and returned in time to play during the Conference USA tournament, but didn’t see much time on the court following the injury. Barton logged only four minutes in three games upon his return.

Barton was the team's leading scorer off the bench at the time of his injury and has shown he is more than capable of scoring when given the minutes. This past season, he scored in double digits in five of the seven games where he played more than 25 minutes, highlighted by a 17 point effort against the Oral Roberts Golden Eagles on Dec. 28, 2012.

The junior gave thanks to the school in a short statement, and will most likely be able to get a quick start where ever he lands at. Barton is on track to graduate from the University of Memphis and would be able to play without sitting out the customary transfer year.

He is the second Tiger to transfer from Memphis after graduating this year, following in the footsteps of forward Tarik Black who announced his departure from the program on April 9. Josh Pastner told CBS Sports he was at peace with Black's decision and had no idea where he would transfer to, although he said he wouldn't be released to any school on Memphis' schedule next year.

The Tigers lost 70-48 in the third round of the 2013 NCAA Tournament to the Michigan St. Spartans. Starting point guard Joe Jackson announced he would forego the NBA Draft and return for his senior season, but the Tigers will lose Barton and Black to transfers, DJ Stephens to graduation and Adonis Thomas to the NBA Draft.
