Joe Dooley named head coach at Florida Gulf Coast

Kansas assistant Joe Dooley was named head coach of Florida Gulf Coast to replace Andy Enfield.

After its miracle Sweet 16 run in the 2013 NCAA Tournament, Florida Gulf Coast University has named Kansas assistant Joe Dooley its head coach.

Dooley replaces Andy Enfield, who rose to coaching stardom this March and took the open job at USC.

Dooley spent the last 10 seasons under Bill Self with the Jayhawks and was a member of the 2008 coaching staff that led Kansas to a National Championship. His only previous head coaching experience was at East Carolina, where he coached the Pirates from 2005-09 and amassed a 57-52 record.

At Kansas, Dooley was known for his recruiting, which certainly won't hurt as he tries to keep the mid-major Eagles in the national spotlight. He is credited with bringing Sasha Kaun and Mario Chalmers to Lawrence. Chalmers, of course, hit that legendary three in the 2008 title game that forced overtime, where the Jayhawks later won.

Florida Gulf Coast is coming off a season where it became the first 15 seed to ever win two games in the NCAA Tournament, highlighted by a second-round win over Georgetown. Next year, the Eagles will return all but two players, though one of the departures is senior and leading scorer Sherwood Brown. The supporting cast of Bernard Thompson, Chase Fieler and Brett Comer is all expected to return.
