ESPN airs video of Rutgers’ Mike Rice throwing basketballs at players’ heads

On Tuesday, video surfaced of Rutgers coach Mike Rice verbally and physically abusing players, including instances where he threw basketballs at their heads and used homophobic slurs. Rice was suspended in December for what the school termed “inappropriate behavior.”

On Tuesday, ESPN's Outside the Lines aired a controversial video of Rutgers head basketball coach Mike Rice that included footage of verbal and physical abuse by Rice -- including homophobic slurs -- and several instances where he shoved players and threw basketballs at their heads.

The video was presented to ESPN by former Rutgers director of player development Eric Murdock, who left the university last summer. On Tuesday’s Outside the Lines, Murdock claimed he was fired, while Rutgers athletic director Tim Pernetti said that Murdock’s contract had not been renewed. At the time, the two sides were at odds over Murdock’s work with a basketball camp not affiliated with Rutgers.

The video comes out just a few short months after Rice had been suspended in December for three games and fined $50,000 for what the school termed “inappropriate behavior.” The suspension followed an internal investigation by the school.

News of the coach’s abusive behavior was originally circulated by the Newark Star-Ledger, but video wasn’t provided until Tuesday.
