Carter requested a release from his scholarship on April 12, according to Brendan Prunty of The Star-Ledger, following the firing of head coach Mike Rice and athletic director Tim Pernetti after video of Rice abusing players was shown by ESPN. The school had a week to make a decision on whether or not to grant Carter's request.
Carter led the Scarlet Knights in scoring in each of the past two seasons, averaging 13.8 points per game as a freshman and increasing his output to 14.9 points per contest before his sophomore season ended with a fractured right fibula on Feb. 16.
Malick Kone, Vincent Garrett, Jerome Seagears and Mike Poole previously announced their intentions to leave the program, which will reportedly hire Eddie Jordan as its new head coach.
