Stephen F. Austin hires Brad Underwood as new coach

The Lumberjacks coaching search lasted a little over three weeks as they announced the hiring of South Carolina associate head coach Brad Underwood on Monday.

USA TODAY Sports

The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks hired Brad Underwood as their new coach on Monday, Jeff Goodman of CBS Sports reported.

The South Carolina Gamecocks previously employed Underwood, who followed coach Frank Martin to South Carolina in 2012. He served as an associate head coach last year, after being an assistant to Frank Martin in 2007-2011 with the Kansas State Wildcats.

The Lumberjacks enjoyed stability in their coaching staff as Danny Kaspar held the job for the past 13 seasons. The school announced his resignation on Thursday, April 4 and revealed that Kaspar agreed to be the new head coach for the Texas State Bobcats.

This is Underwood’s first head coaching position at the Division-I level, and he takes over a program that had sustained success under Kaspar. Kaspar posted a 246-141 record for the Lumberjacks and led them to seven 20-win seasons, three Southland Conference regular-season titles, two appearances in the NIT and a 2009 appearance in the NCAA Tournament.

The Lumberjacks finished atop the Southland Conference standings this season, but lost to Northwestern State in the conference tournament to miss out on an auto-berth to the NCAA Tournament. Stephen F. Austin lost 58-57 to the Stanford Cardinal in the first round of the 2013 NIT Tournament.

Underwood will need to do some retooling to the starting five for the Lumberjacks next year. Forward Taylor Smith and guards Antonio Bostic and Hal Bateman were all seniors this year -- with Smith and Bostic the top two scorers on the team.
