David Pellom to transfer from George Washington to Memphis

A surprising, late pick-up should help the Memphis Tigers basketball team reload for a big 2014 season.

USA TODAY Sports

After losing a handful of key players this off-season, Memphis got a strong late edition on Tuesday when it was announced that George Washington’s Dave Pellom will transfer to the school. Pellom will be eligible to play for the Tigers immediately.

The news was first reported by the Memphis Commercial-Appeal’s L. Jason Smith, who tweeted the following this evening:

Pellom will have one year of eligibility at Memphis, after sitting out the entire 2013 season with a wrist injury. During the 2011-2012 campaign Pellom averaged 10.4 points, and a team-high 6.1 rebounds per game for the Colonials.

Pellom’s arrival in Memphis will immediately add depth to a club which will likely begin next season ranked in the top 15, despite the loss of a number of key players off the 2013 squad.

Along with the departure of senior D.J. Stephens, the Tigers' received surprising news when sophomore small forward Adonis Thomas declared for the NBA Draft and power forward Tarik Black elected to transfer for his senior year.

Pellom should help fill the void of Black, who averaged 8.1 points and 4.8 rebounds in 20.8 minutes played per game last season.

Memphis’ 2013 season ended with a Round of 32 loss to Michigan State in the NCAA Tournament.
