Sheldon McClellan transfer: Texas guard considering Miami, Illinois, Marquette, among others

The guard led Texas in scoring for most of the year, and is now looking at other high-majors where he can develop his game and compete for a championship.

USA TODAY Sports

Texas guard Sheldon McClellan announced his intention to transfer back in late March, and Miami, Illinois and Marquette are among the candidates to land him, according to CBS's Jeff Goodman.

McClellan averaged 13.5 points per game last season for the Longhorns and led the team in scoring until Myck Kabongo returned from a drawn-out suspension by the NCAA. McClellan's mother told ESPN that there were no hard feelings, and the sophomore was simply looking for a "better fit."

That fit might be in another high-major conference where, after sitting out a year, McClellan will look to make an immediate impact.

Miami might be an intriguing option for McClellan. He would be going to a team coming off a dream season and would be one of two highly touted additions to the Hurricanes’ backcourt. 2014 shooting guard Adonys Henriquez has already committed to Miami and is ranked as a four-star recruit by ESPN.

After that, it is tough to project what McClellan’s options might look like when he is finally able to play. The schools on his list were all led by upper-classmen this year and have question marks surrounding their immediate futures. Because of McClellan’s apparent disconnect with Texas coach Rick Barnes, a stronger potential player-coach relationship might be a huge factor in his decision.
