Jerome Seagears transferring from Rutgers following Mike Rice’s suspension

The exodus from the Rutgers basketball program continues.

Rutgers guard Jerome Seagears has announced his intention to transfer from the university, according to Brendan Prunty of The Star-Ledger. The departure follows the leaking of practice video that shows Scarlet Knights head coach Mike Rice mistreating players, including throwing basketballs at their heads.

Seagears was a starter for Rutgers as a sophomore.and played 68 percent of available minutes. He is a solid shooter, knocking down 38 percent from three and 74 percent from the foul line last season. The 6’1 guard was limited by his inability to make shots inside the arc (26 percent) and his tendency to turn the ball over. 22 percent of his possessions wound up in the hands of the other team.

Rice was originally suspended in December for "inappropriate conduct," but the details of his suspension had not surfaced until this week. The revelations have spurred a number of transfers, including the departures of Malick Kone and Vincent Garrett.

If the university wants to get rid of Rice, Dave White of Rutgers blog On The Banks points out that the coach would have to submit his resignation. The school is dealing with a lawsuit from former staffer Eric Murdock in connection with the incident, and firing Rice would likely tip the case in his favor.
