The Connecticut Huskies will play for the 2013 NCAA Women’s Basketball National Championship following a convincing 83-65 win over Notre Dame on Sunday night at New Orleans Arena.
Notre Dame vs. Connecticut results: Huskies cruise past Irish, 83-65
After falling to Notre Dame in the Big East Tournament, Connecticut got the last laugh as the Huskies advanced to the national title game.
The Huskies moved out to a double-digit lead by halftime and never looked back. Notre Dame tried to answer with a couple of runs, but Connecticut’s defense was just too much. They held the Irish to just 30 percent shooting from the field.
Breanna Stewart led the Huskies with 29 points and four blocks. She went 4-for-5 from behind the three-point arc. Whenever UConn really needed a basket, it seemed Stewart was always able to come through. Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis scored 16 points and brought down five rebounds. Bria Hartley chipped in with 15 points, five rebounds and four steals off the bench.
Skylar Diggins picked a bad night to have one of her worst games of the season. The All-American had just 10 points, going 3-for-15 from the field. Connecticut was physical with Diggins and it appeared to throw her off her game. She also turned the ball over six times.
The two teams combined to turn the ball over 40 times.
With the win, Connecticut advances to the national championship game to face the Louisville Cardinals on Tuesday night. The game will be televised on ESPN.
