Rutgers launches independent investigation of Mike Rice scandal

After firing basketball coach Mike Rice last week, Rutgers University announced on Monday that they would launch an independent investigation to look into their entire athletics department.

Following the firing of former head basketball coach Mike Rice, Rutgers University has launched an independent investigation into its entire athletics department, according to NBCSports.com.

The announcement came at a town hall speech on Monday morning by Rutgers president Robert Barchi on the university’s Newark campus. Barchi said that the school is reviewing practice videos from all sports to ensure that no other coaches at the school are engaging in similar behaviors. The Rutgers Board of Governors will meet Thursday to hire an independent adviser for the case.

The decision comes less than a week after ESPN’s Outside the Lines released videos from Rutgers basketball practice, in which Rice was seen both physically abusing players and using homophobic slurs to describe their play. Rutgers was made aware of the videos in November and at the time suspended Rice for three games and fined him $50,000, but he wasn’t fired until Wednesday, after the videos were made public by Outside the Lines.

Rutgers athletic director Tim Pernetti also resigned under pressure on Friday, and there was discussion of whether Barchi should lose his job as well.

Barchi claims he did not see the videos until last week and told the crowd that he would’ve fired Rice immediately if he had seen them when they first surfaced, according to NBC Sports.
