Joseph Young transferring from Houston to Oregon

Dana Altman has added one of the nation’s top scorers to help rebuild the Ducks after a Sweet 16 season.

US PRESSWIRE

Former Houston Cougars guard Joseph Young will transfer to the Oregon Ducks and apply for a waiver to play in the upcoming season, according to Gary Parrish of CBSsports.com.

Young scored 18.0 points per game last season as a sophomore for Houston, but decided to transfer after his father, former Cougars director of basketball operations Michael Young, was reassigned within the Houston athletic department. Michael Young refused the reassignment and was let go.

The basis of Young's waiver to be eligible at Oregon immediately is that his father was fired from the school, according to Parrish. Parrish also reported the waiver is considered a long shot to be successful, be noted Trey Ziegler won immediate eligibility last season transferring from Central Michigan to Pittsburgh after his father, Ernie Ziegler, was fired as the Central Michigan head coach.

Young redshirted his first season at Houston, so if his waiver is not granted, he’ll be forced to sit out next season and have one year of eligibility remaining.

He is one of potentially eight new players on next year's Ducks roster, according to Bob Clark of the Eugene Register-Guard. If Young were to be eligible to play in 2013-14, he'd join former UNLV guard Mike Moser as two Division I transfers among the Ducks' newcomers. Head coach Dana Altman's class also includes three junior-college transfers and three incoming freshmen.
