Marcus Smart is lone college player invited to Team USA mini-camp

The Oklahoma State guard could have jumped to the NBA after last year. Now, he’ll have a chance to play with the pros at the Team USA mini-camp.

USA TODAY Sports

Oklahoma State guard Marcus Smart was invited to the U.S. men's national team mini-camp in Las Vegas on Wednesday, becoming the only college player asked to attend.

The camp will run from July 22-25 and features young NBA players like John Wall, Kyrie Irving and reigning Rookie of the Year Damian Lillard.

“It is a great honor to be invited to participate with the USA men’s national team,” Smart said in a statement released by Oklahoma State. “The other players at the mini-camp are NBA professionals who I look up to and respect. I’m excited to learn from them and to compete against them.”

Smart has already represented the United States on the court before. He previously led the nation’s U-18 and U-19 teams to championships over the last two summers. He averaged 9.6 points per game as team captain of the U-19 squad.

A total of 29 players, including Smart, have agreed to attend.

“We’re very excited for Marcus,” Cowboys coach Travis Ford said in the release. “It’s an incredible honor to be the lone college player to be selected. It’s a great honor for him and our program. He continues to represent us in a first-class manner, both on and off the court.”
