Stanford center Andy Brown tears ACL for 4th time

The senior was a key contributor to the Cardinal’s frontcourt last year, but his career with Stanford is now over.

Stanford center Andy Brown has torn his ACL for the fourth time in his career, Jeff Goodman of ESPN reports.

Due to the long recovery time that follows, an ACL tear is typically a season-ending injury, so Brown’s career with the Cardinal appears to be over.

“Even though this is a difficult way to end my career, I feel grateful to have been able to wear a Stanford uniform and contribute to such a great program and university,” Brown said in a statement from the school’s athletic department. “I will do everything I can to help the team from the sideline this year and am looking forward to all that we will accomplish.”

Brown redshirted his freshman year with a torn ACL, his second in 10 months. He had injured the same knee the previous January, which ended his senior season at Mater Dei High School. His third ACL tear came prior to the 2010-11 season, causing him to miss that entire year as well.

“Everyone associated with our program is saddened by Andy’s latest injury,” Stanford head coach Johnny Dawkins said in the department’s statement. “Nobody has worked harder to get back into playing shape, having already experienced three tears and waiting two full years before putting on a uniform.

Last year, Brown started 20 games, averaging 6.2 points and 2.8 rebounds. The Fullerton, Calif., native was also a Pac-12 Second Team All-Academic honoree. He appeared in 42 games total during his abbreviated collegiate career.
