New Mexico’s Cullen Neal has appendectomy

Neal should be ready for the start of practice, though.

New Mexico Lobos freshman guard Cullen Neal had an emergency appendectomy last week on a team trip to Australia but expects to be ready for the official start of practice in September, Jeff Goodman of ESPN.com reported Friday.

Neal experienced stomach pains on the flight overseas and checked into a hospital upon arrival, where he stayed for 11 days, Goodman said. Goodman reported Neal lost 15 pounds over the course of the episode.

Neal was originally a St. Mary's signee, but he was released from his letter of intent to sign with New Mexico when his father, Craig Neal, was named New Mexico's head coach after Steve Alford left for the UCLA Bruins. Neal, a 6-4 guard, was a three-star recruit and the No. 31 point guard recruit in the class of 2013, according to Rivals.com. Rivals also listed him as the No. 145 overall recruit in the class.
