Michigan State and Ohio State fans are buying NJIT shirts to mock Wolverines

That’s one way to mock your rival.

Michigan lost to NJIT (New Jersey Institute of Technology) in what will very likely end up being the upset of the year. This was more than your typical “small conference team beats big conference team” upset, since NJIT is the only Division I team to not play in a conference.

NJIT has gotten a nice publicity blitz from the win, and the Highlanders got a $92,000 payout for a game that they were supposed to lose. They’ve also gotten a spike in merchandise sales from an unlikely region:

It’s also a chance for Michigan’s rivals to give the Wolverines a little ribbing, as exemplified in a New York Times story. According to Pete Marazano, the manager at the NJIT bookstore, his usual Monday morning order of two or three T-shirts ballooned to six pages of online orders following the big upset.

Marazano indicated that most of the orders were coming from Ohio, Michigan and Indiana. Count on seeing a few of them during Big Ten season at various venues.

Expect to see a lot of these in Columbus, East Lansing and Bloomington when the Wolverines hit the road this year.
