Incarnate Word beats Nebraska, learn about em

    Bruce Thorson-USA TODAY Sports

Incarnate Word went into Lincoln and beat the Nebraska Cornhuskers, 74-73, getting the go-ahead bucket with two seconds to go on this incredible fadeaway jumper by Kyle Hittle:

Most will focus on the Big Ten’s recent ugly stretch of play against unknowns. Michigan lost to NJIT. Michigan lost to Eastern Michigan. Nebraska lost to Incarnate Word. And these are supposed to top teams in America’s best conference? What is this?

Yes, I believe Harrell blocked that shot off the backboard knowing the carom would cause two Indiana players to run face-first into one another.

Michigan loses second straight, to EMU

    Rick Osentoski-USA TODAY Sports

After starting 6-1, Michigan has lost two straight to unlikely opponents: after their historically improbable loss to NJIT, the Wolverines fell to Eastern Michigan, 45-42.

While the Wolverines’ loss to NJIT featured a pretty reasonable Michigan performance offset by absolutely blistering Highlanders shooting, this was a horrendous game by the Wolverines. They shot 14-for-42 from the field, 4-for-20 from deep, only managed two offensive rebounds in spite of all their misses, and turned the ball over 13 times. Fans in Ohio, Indiana, Michigan buying NJIT shirts

    Rick Osentoski-USA TODAY Sports

Michigan lost to NJIT (New Jersey Institute of Technology) in what will very likely end up being the upset of the year. This was more than your typical “small conference team beats big conference team” upset, since NJIT is the only Division I team to not play in a conference.

NJIT has gotten a nice publicity blitz from the win, and the Highlanders got a $92,000 payout for a game that they were supposed to lose. They’ve also gotten a spike in merchandise sales from an unlikely region:

    Cats unanimous No. 1

For the first time in the 2014-15 season, Kentucky has received all 64 first-place votes in the Associated Press Top 25 poll. The Wildcats, who have been No. 1 since before the start of the season, had claimed all but three of the nods for the top spot the past two weeks.

Those other three No. 1 votes had been cast in the direction of Wisconsin, but the Badgers’ 80-70 home loss to Duke last week knocked them from No. 2 down to No. 5. The Blue Devils used the big victory to leapfrog Arizona and claim the No. 2 spot. Louisville rounds out this week’s top five by moving up one spot to No. 4.
