ACC Tournament 2014: T.J. Warren highlights Day 2 in Greensboro

Thursday at the ACC Tournament saw the end of Maryland’s stay in the ACC, (possibly) the end of Jeff Bzdelik’s tenure at Wake Forest and much, much more. SB Nation was there to cover it all for you.

And now, a moment of silence for the Maryland Terrapins in the ACC Tournament. We hardly knew ye.

Well, actually we knew ye pretty well but your administration didn’t understand simple economics and had to bolt for the Big 17, destroying a decades-long legacy of ACC play. Alas, it all came crashing down today courtesy of a last-second Boris Bojanovsky dunk that put ninth-seeded Florida State into the ACC quarterfinals on Friday. Oh, how many chances there were for Turtle Power! In the end, though, all that matters are the memories...and the money.

And the FSU Golden Girls:

As the clock ticked down in the glorified layup line that was Pitt/Wake Forest, a group of Demon Deacon fans in the lower bowl began various chants, starting with “Five more minutes” and ending with “Bye-bye, Buzz” as the inevitable search for a new head Deac is now set to begin...or is it?

The popular Wake Forest rumor of the day is that Wake Forest has been offered an opportunity to continue their season in the CBI, a pay-to-play postseason tourney. Coach Jeff Bzdelik indicated that he'd rather not go out losing like they did Thursday, an 84-55 curb-stomping that should best be forgotten. Leading scorer Coron Williams said he would welcome the opportunity to play with his teammates once more.

What say you, Tie Dye Nation?

The first game of the evening session featured the N.C. State Wolfpack and Miami Hurricanes...and 15,000-plus red-clad, noisy Wolfpack fans. An N.C. State win meant a rematch with top-seeded Syracuse in the quarterfinals, a loss would put Mark Gottfried and his charges squarely in the NIT and wondering what might have been. As he is wont to do, however, ACC Player of the Year T.J. Warren went for a ho-hum 24 points and 8 rebounds and the Pack dispatched the defending champions, 67-58. My prediction for Syracuse/State.

Higher Education

The fourth and final game of the day was a blockbuster matchup between Georgia Tech and Clemson. God knows the Wolfpack fans tried to hang in there, but after a troll-ugly first half most of the arena denizens headed for the exits. Business picked up in the second half, though, as Georgia Tech frittered away another lead (kind of a reverse “Clemsoning), leading to a Clemson win. Their reward for a hard-fought overtime win over Tech? Duke.

Quotable:

“I don’t know when that decision is made. I’ve never been in that situation or how the process works. But right now everybody just needs to take a break from each other and focus on their own selves. Then we can come together as a group.”

-Travis McKie, G,Wake Forest on whether he would welcome the opportunity to play in the CBI tournament
