2014 NCAA Tournament results: Virginia pulls away late, Kentucky advances
Some mellow games put an end to the first two days of the Madness.
The Round of 64 has wrapped up. Virginia became the final No. 1 seed to advance, Wildcat defeated Wildcat and Iowa State dominated.
No. 3 Iowa State 93, No. 14 North Carolina Central 79
There wasn’t any one moment for Iowa State that put the game on ice. The Cyclones started building their lead in the last several minutes of the first half, then blew the game open in the second half. ISU Head Coach Fred Hoiberg didn’t dig deep into his bench, playing only seven players despite building a 20-point lead with less than eight minutes remaining.
Jeremy Ingram finished his career as an Eagle with a bang, scoring 28 points and grabbing five rebounds. It wasn't even close to enough to stop the high-powered Cyclone offense. ISU's up-tempo attack led to 64 percent shooting from the field, including 9-of-17 from the three-point line
Perhaps the biggest development of the game was Georges Niang going out in the second half with a foot injury and not returning. Niang led Iowa State with 24 points on 9-of-14 shooting, including hitting four of his five tries from deep. He was part of Iowa State tying Michigan State for the most points scored of any team so far in the Big Dance.
ISU matches up with North Carolina on Sunday.
No. 1 Virginia 70, No. 16 Coastal Carolina 59
Coastal Carolina started the second half with a five-point lead, but Virginia’s suffocating defense ended up being too much for the Big South champs, and the Cavaliers kept the tradition of every No. 1 seed advancing alive for another year.
In the second half, Virginia had two separate stretches defensively where it held Coastal Carolina without a field goal for over four minutes. Part of that defensive effort was holding the Chanticleers' leading scorer, freshman guard Elijah Wilson, to only six points on 2-of-13 shooting. Anthony Gill came off the bench for Virginia to lead the game in scoring with 17.
Virginia advances to play Memphis Sunday.
No. 8 Kentucky 56, No. 9 Kansas State 49
Julius Randle continued his domination of the paint with 19 points and 15 rebounds in leading the Wildcats to past the other Wildcats. UK also got a good scoring effort from Aaron Harrison with 18 points.
Neither team had a particularly good night from beyond the arc, combining to go 9-of-36. Both teams struggled to put the ball in the basket by any means, really. KSU shot 50 percent from the foul line while UK hit 67 percent; UK hit 38 percent from the field against 36 percent for KSU. Marcus Foster led Kansas State with 15 points.
Kentucky will take on Wichita State on Sunday.
No. 4 UCLA 76, No. 13 Tulsa 59
Jordan Adams had 21 points and eight rebounds to lead the Bruins to an easy win over Danny Manning's Tulsa squad. Norman Powell added 15 points and five steals for UCLA. D`Andre Wright led the Golden Hurricane with 18. points, but Tulsa was held to just 37 percent shooting in the loss.
The Bruins play Friday darling Stephen F. Austin on Sunday.
