Doug McDermott wins Naismith Award

McDermott was a no-doubt pick for the award after climbing to No. 5 on the NCAA’s all-time scoring list.

To the surprise of no one, Creighton's Doug McDermott won the Naismith Award on Sunday night, which is given annually to the best player in college basketball. He won the award over Arizona guard Nick Johnson, Louisville guard Russ Smith and Duke forward Jabari Parker.

McDermott averaged 26.7 points per game as a senior in 2013-14. He also averaged seven rebounds and nearly two assists a night. He shot 52.6 percent from the floor overall and 45 percent from behind the arc. McDermott’s standout senior season was a historic one as he climbed to fifth on the Division I’s all-time scoring list. He finishes his career at Creighton 517 points away from being the NCAA’s all-time scoring leader. Earlier in the year, he surpassed legends such as Larry Bird and Oscar Robertson on the scoring list.

Creighton sat in the top 10 for most of the season and earned a No. 3 seed in the NCAA Tournament. The Bluejays lost in the third round to Baylor.

In addition to the Naismith Award, McDermott has been named a consensus first-team All-American. He was also named the Big East’s Player of the Year and the national player of the year by nearly every sports publication in the country.
