College hoops schedule and results: Mike Krzyzewski wins No. 1,000, Virginia survives
Dez Wells and Maryland break Northwestern’s heart

Mitch Stringer-USA TODAY SportsNorthwestern had led Maryland from start to finish. Their lead over the 13th-ranked Terps was 11 with 3:24 to play. Then, as tends to happen with Chris Collins’ team, things fell apart.
Here’s the game’s final sequence, which ended in predictably heartbreaking fashion for the visitors:

Rob Kinnan-USA TODAY SportsNotre Dame overcame an 18-point first-half deficit, nearly hit a game-winning halfcourt shot at the end of regulation, and then held on for an 81-78 win at NC State thanks to this final sequence:
It appeared as though Trevor Lacey’s final shot did not leave his hands before the clock hit zero, which probably makes it better for NC State that it didn’t go down. It doesn’t make it all right ... just better.
Read Article >Coach K Wins 1,000

Anthony Gruppuso-USA TODAY SportsEven with this unbelievable start, you would still need to maintain your job, not take any leave of absences or NBA gigs, and win an average of 22 games per season if you wanted to reach the 1,000-win milestone that Mike Krzyzewski just hit. It would be the year 2060, and you would be 45 years older than you are right now.
Given the current state of the college hoops landscape, where both moderate and high levels of success typically breed some type of change, it almost feels more likely than not that after Jim Boeheim wins number 1,000 in a couple of seasons (assuming that happens), we’re never going to see another Division-I head coach hit four figures again. Despite that statement, the achievement certainly isn’t going to change the way Coach K is perceived. The numbers and the comparisons and the crazy facts are all good for making readers and viewers say “wow” to no one in particular, but Krzyzewski’s primary legacy was established well before Sunday, and would have remained in tact whenever win 1,000 was achieved.

Some trash talk about Arizona’s scholastic rank, graduation rate information, ‘Zona head coach Sean Miller is a Mafia member or a vampire ... wait, WHAT?!

Rick Osentoski-USA TODAY SportsMichigan gave the Badgers a game and then some at the Crisler Center, but Wisconsin hit enough shots down the stretch for the 69-64 victory. The win moves the Badgers to 18-2 overall and 6-1 in the conference. Michigan falls to 12-8, 5-3.
Walton Jr. scored the last seven points in regulation for Michigan to force overtime. His driving layup with 24 seconds left made it a two-point game, and he tied it up with a three-pointer from the left wing with two seconds left.

Michael C. Johnson-USA TODAY SportsIn what is and will likely remain the biggest upset of the weekend, Texas Tech notched its first Big 12 win of the season by stunning No. 9 Iowa State 78-73 in Lubbock.
The Red Raiders were in a free-fall entering Saturday, having lost each of their last two games by 20 points and their first six conference games by an average of 16.5 points. Iowa State, meanwhile, was looking to remain tied atop the league standings with an 11th-ranked Kansas team they had beaten at home a week ago.

Tommy Gilligan-USA TODAY SportsThe most insane finish of Saturday took place in Morgantown, where an overtime period between West Virginia and TCU included the following: a crazy number of replay reviews, about three dozen (or just three) missed free throws by the Horned Frogs, two shots described as the “game-winner” by the announcer (neither of which actually won the game), and then a pair of game-winning free throws by a freshman with less than a second to play.
Here’s the most important sequence of the game:

Brendan Maloney-USA TODAY SportsIt seems like there’s a ranked team playing a ranked team in the Big 12 almost every day this season. The conference is loaded top to bottom, with all challengers trying to end Kansas’ amazing 10-year stranglehold at the top. The Jayhawks have seemed vulnerable at times this season, giving the impression that this may finally be the year the streak ends.
Maybe all that hope was premature. No. 11 Kansas went into Texas on Saturday afternoon and came away with a 75-62 win in what might have been the Jayhawks’ most complete performance of the season. Kansas didn’t turn the ball over once in the second half and had their way with a stacked front line for the No. 17 Longhorns for most of the evening.

It’s DePaul’s world and we’re all just living in it -- a fact of life emphasized during the Blue Demons’ incredible first half against Xavier on Saturday morning. DePaul headed into the locker room with a 50-42 lead by shooting over 63 percent from the field and making 11-of-19 three-pointers.
The ultimate sign of confidence? Passing up an open layup for an open three-pointer. DePaul’s offense is on first right now.

Mark Dolejs-USA TODAY SportsNo. 1 Kentucky at South Carolina (Saturday - Noon/ESPN)
This isn’t quite a trendy upset pick, but it’s certainly become a trendy “hey this might be closer than you think” pick. There’s no question that Kentucky is college basketball’s main attraction right now, so even when there’s the slightest chance of their perfect record getting mucked up, it’s worth tuning in for.
