Mike Krzyzewski insists bump from Indiana player was not a big deal

Mark Dolejs-USA TODAY Sports

There was an unusual moment heading into halftime between Duke and Indiana on Wednesday night. Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski was headed off the court then suddenly there was a bit of activity that resulted in Krzyzewski having a discussion with referees and Indiana head coach Tom Crean.

It all stemmed from this:

Around the 12 second mark of that video, Krzyzewski appears to get bumped/nudged/brushed into by a Indiana’s Max Bielfeldt. The contact appears to be fairly inadvertent and unintentional, at least judging it from somewhat unclear video. Bielfeldt appears to be turning around and in all likelihood didn’t even know Krzyzewski was there. Or maybe he did and that was all a plotted move to get in Krzyzewski’s head. Who knows.

Regardless of whether the contact seems to be consequential, it still set off a weird pre-halftime discussion. Before heading to the locker room, Krzyzewski talked to both Crean and officials.

That’s a lot of hubub over an apparent incidental bump, but it seems it was more about confusion than anything. After the game, Krzyzewski said he thought it was probably an accident and made a note to officials that he didn’t want to make anything of it.

“I didn’t even know what the hell happened. All of a sudden boom I got hit,” Krzyzewski said. “Usually, when you get hit you do something. I didn’t do anything. Usually if you got hit someone would say ‘I’m sorry, I ran into you’.”

That conversation starts at the 7:00 mark of Krzyzewski’s postgame interview below.

So there you have it. For a moment it appeared we were on the way to BUMPGATE, but instead Krzyzewski was just temporarily confused by what just happened and that’s that.
