— Thon Maker ™ (@ThonMaker14) February 18, 2015 His tweet confirms months of speculation of whether he would jump from the class of 2016 to the class of 2015, which means he’s now in position to play college basketball (or professionally internationally) in the 2015-16 season.
The five-star, 7-foot undeclared South Sudan native grew up in Australia, plays high school ball at Orangeville Prep (Canada) and is sporting offers, most notably, from Kansas, Kentucky, Arizona, Duke, Georgetown, Louisville, Virginia and more. Maker was ranked as the No. 4 overall prospect and No. 1 overall center in the scout class of 2016, now slotted as the No. 6 overall recruit in 2015, and will be one the most sought after players among the senior class.
There are many options for Maker in the coming months, and there were plenty of benefits. He could stay at Orangeville Prep for a post-grad year and then go straight to the NBA in 2016. He could also take the newly-popular route of heading overseas like former SMU recruit Emmanuel Mudiay.
Maker is an athletic center with a high motor and a nose for defensive rebounding and emphatic shot blocking. He has versatility in his low-post moves and is easily a high major target for any school and a potential lottery pick for any year’s draft.
