Georgetown’s coach taught Eastern Washington’s coach not to talk smack

Never guarantee a victory to the press. No matter how many times Georgetown has lost in the early rounds of the tournament.

Well, Eastern Washington’s Jim Hayford thought it was a good idea to guarantee a victory before playing the Georgetown Hoyas in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. For the record, that is never a smart move.

So when the Hoyas eventually beat Eastern Washington Thursday night, John Thompson III reminded him that he should never talk smack before the game begins.

From ESPN: Maybe it’s just me, but when I think of that, I think of Joe Namath, I think of Muhammad Ali, I think of Larry Bird and the 3-point shooting contest,” Thompson said. “The kids brought it to me and said, `Their coach is guaranteeing victory.’ I kind of looked down there at him. Thought he didn’t foot the bill of guys that usually guarantee victory. Our guys were fired up about that.”

Moral of the story? Don’t go flapping your gums no matter how pumped you are to be on the big stage until you get the win. Which would also explain why, at the end of the game, Jabril Trawick dunked with under five seconds remaining. Some players don’t like it when the No. 13 seed talks smack about the four-seed.
