Terrified Wisconsin player borrows Kobe’s locker

Well this is just a good-ass photo:
The Badgers are in LA to face UNC in the Sweet 16, and stenographer superfan Nigel Hayes appears to have inherited Kobe Bryant’s Staples Center locker for the occasion. And he also inherited whatever horrible ghouls live inside that locker and frighten the bejesus out of unsuspecting visitors, I guess.

Greg Bartram-USA TODAY SportsWest Virginia beat Maryland to advance to the Sweet 16 on Sunday. Coach Bob Huggins’ two daughters were in Columbus, Ohio for the game and spent the trip insulting Terrapin guard Dez Wells in person and online.
Here is what Jenna Leigh Huggins — who the Baltimore Sun notes is listed as a West Virginia program assistant on the Mountaineers website — tweeted. Her account is now private.

The Badgers never put the game out of reach; their largest lead was at 20-9 with 9:54 to play in the first half, but Oregon spent most of the game hanging within a four- to eight-point window. But when the Ducks finally tied the game in the game’s final six minutes, their offense seized. Whereas Wisconsin remained patient with the ball despite just three points in 3 1/2 minutes, Oregon took quick shots from distance and committed careless turnovers.
Wisconsin moves on to face No. 4 North Carolina on Thursday at 7:47 p.m. ET. No. 2 Arizona and No. 6 Xavier are the other two teams playing in Los Angeles for a trip to the Final Four.

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY SportsGonzaga came into its third-round game against Iowa on Sunday with a statement to make, and that’s exactly what happened. The Bulldogs rolled past the Hawkeyes, 87-68, ending their streak of five straight losses in the third tound.
With the win, Gonzaga is in the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2009 and just the third time since 2002. It will face No. 11 seed UCLA on Friday night in Houston, with the winner advancing to the Elite Eight.

Wichita State and Kansas might have been the most anticipated game in the round of 32 partly because the Jayhawks have annually refused to schedule the in-state Shockers during the regular season. Wichita State earned the victory rather easily against No. 2 Kansas on Sunday, and it didn’t even really feel like an upset. You knew Wichita State be enjoying is, and they are:
We give that statement four fire emojis.

Only way to keep it close against a team as good as Gonzaga is to go all out. So far, so good, Iowa.

Steven Branscombe-USA TODAY SportsTekele Cotton’s 19 points led all scorers, and Wichita State got 17 points, six rebounds, and six assists from senior point guard Fred VanVleet. All five Shockers starters scored in double figures, compared to just two Kansas starters, and Wayne Selden, Jr. went scoreless for just the third time this season.
And the game really wasn’t that close, despite intensity on display from both teams. Kansas led by eight with five minutes to play in the first half, but Wichita State closed on a 13-2 run to take a 29-26 lead to the break. After a Frank Mason III layup cut the deficit to one on the first possession of the second half, Cotton went on a personal 5-0 run, and Wichita State never let the Jayhawks get within four points from that moment on — they led by 16 before a Devonte’ Graham three in the final seconds set the final score.

Gonzaga is in the NCAA Tournament for the 17th consecutive year, but the Bulldogs have not reached the Elite Eight since the first year of that stretch in 1999. That year was also the last time that Iowa reached the Sweet 16.
This is the seventh year in a row that Gonzaga has reached the Round of 32, with the Bulldogs falling short of the Sweet 16 each of the last five times. As a No. 8 seed last year, Gonzaga lost by 23 to top-seeded Arizona. Iowa, meanwhile, fell to Tennessee in the First Four last year.

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY SportsThis is the first time Northern Iowa has made the tournament since 2010, a year the Panthers made the Sweet 16. They won the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament title and dismantled Wyoming in the Round of 64. Now, they’re facing a power conference team with more talent, but that has struggle to find consistency this season.
The success of Northern Iowa depends on their star point guard Seth Tuttle. The 6’8 senior leads the team in points, rebounds and assists. He had 14 points, nine rebounds and three assists in the win over Wyoming and is going to need a similar performance -- if not better -- against the strong Louisville defense.

Greg Bartram-USA TODAY SportsAfter several huge upsets on Thursday, the games on Friday were much more predictable. Two No. 3 seeds fell on the opening day, but No. 3 Oklahoma fended off No. 14 Albany for a 69-60 win. The only real surprise on Friday was No. 11 Dayton topping No. 6 Providence, and that upset sets the Flyers up for a Sunday matchup against the Sooners in which they hope to become one of the Cinderellas of this tournament.
Both of the late games are No. 4 vs. No. 5 matchups, which should also prove to be fascinating. Both No. 4 Maryland and No. 4 Louisville squeaked by in their first games by a combined five points, and they know they’ll have to play better to keeping dancing into next week. Maryland’s opponent, No. 5 West Virginia, also barely survived. A huge Tarik Phillip three-pointer with 28 seconds to go led the Mountaineers to a decisive 68-62 win, but head coach Bob Huggins admitted he meant to make an offensive substitution for Phillip and just forgot.
