Basketball powerhouses and upstart Cinderellas meet on Saturday in the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament.
Seven underdogs have rolled into the second round of the big dance, but the inspiring stories of Yale, Little Rock, Wichita State, and Gonzaga could soon come to an end. That foursome of double-digit seeded schools will go up against some of the nation's top basketball teams on Saturday. Yale, who knocked off Taurean Prince, Rico Gathers, and Baylor on Thursday will now have to deal with Grayson Allen, Brandon Ingram, and Duke. Little Rock, who won its first NCAA Tournament game in 30 years two days ago, has to replicate that success against Iowa State.
And then we get to two programs who have heard the word Cinderella more often than a Disney animator. Gonzaga and Wichita State showed off their tournament savvy by breezing to big wins as 11 seeds on Thursday. Standing between them and another Sweet Sixteen bid are three seeds Utah and Miami, respectively.
On the opposite side of the spectrum, three of the tournament’s top-seeded teams will also be in action. Connecticut and overall No. 1 Kansas will throw down in a game between two programs that have won four of the last 12 national championships. Nine seed Butler and one seed Virginia will light up the scoreboard behind two of the nation’s most efficient scoring attacks. And Providence, the team that graciously provided the world with some last minute magic by dropping USC with a last-ditch layup, will have a chance to avenge a 2014 tournament loss when it faces North Carolina in Raleigh.
But the game of the day could be an afternoon showdown between hardwood royalty. Indiana and Kentucky, two teams embedded in a region where the official religion might as well be basketball, will meet at 5:15. The Hoosiers beat the brakes off an overmatched Chattanooga team on Thursday. The Wildcats did the same to undermanned Stony Brook later that night.
Now, these two powerhouse programs are set to collide with a Sweet Sixteen spot on the line. Can Yogi Ferrell carry his Big Ten title holders to another week of basketball? Or will Tyler Ulis and Jamal Murray roll the SEC champs to a seventh straight victory?
