Oklahoma State basketball player Tyrek Coger died after collapsing during workout

Rob Ferguson-USA TODAY Sports

Oklahoma State basketball player Tyrek Coger died on Thursday after collapsing, the school announced. He was 21 years old.

According to the team, Coger collapsed during an afternoon workout and was transported to a hospital where he was later pronounced dead. Oklahoma State head coach Brad Underwood, in a team statement, said the loss was like losing a member of his own family.

“Tyrek was excited to be at Oklahoma State and had such passion for the game and was looking forward to being an OSU Cowboy. Losing a member of the team is like losing a member of the family. But we know our loss pales in comparison to the pain his family is going through,”

The tragedy comes just weeks after Coger arrived on campus. He transferred from Cape Fear Community College and was set to play his junior season for Oklahoma State. Originally from North Carolina, Coger joined Oklahoma State late after some issues trying to transfer to Ole Miss. In June, he talked about how excited he was to join the Cowboys and play with his new teammates.

In high school, Coger needed an operation to have fluid around his brain drained, according to the Stillwater News Press. There was a chance the situation could have ended his basketball career with strenuous activity putting him at risk of having a seizure. He eventually gained medical clearance and resumed his basketball career.

No cause of death has been announced.
