By now, you’ve heard about Michigan’s plane going off the runway ahead of the Big Ten Tournament, forcing the shaken-up Wolverines to arrive only hours before their first scheduled game. Rather than falter, the team walked away with the tournament championship.

After winning a 92-91 opening round shootout with Oklahoma State, the No. 7 seed Wolverines toppled the No. 2 seed in the Midwest, Louisville, in a 73-69 win. Moritz Wagner, the sophomore from Germany, had a huge game for Michigan. Wagner scored a career-high 26 points and caused havoc inside, outside, and off the dribble. Michigan will need Wagner to continue playing at this level, and some more production from leading scorer Derrick Walton Jr., if it hopes to continue this run.

Directly in their path: an Oregon Ducks team that needed a game-winning three from Tyler Dorsey to survive Rhode Island’s upset bid in the second round. In fact, Dorsey put on an exemplary shooting performance, going 9-of-10 from the field and 4-of-5 from deep for a game-high 27 points. Dillon Brooks, Pac-12 Player of the Year, added 19 points as the only other Oregon player to finish in double digits. To stop the Wolverines, the Ducks will need an effort more like their 93-77 opening-round win against Iona.
Still without big man Chris Boucher (ACL tear), Oregon will be undersized against the Michigan frontcourt. Wagner stands at 6’11 and junior forward D.J. Wilson is 6’10, while Oregon’s frontcourt currently consists of the 6’7 Brooks and junior forward Jordan Bell at 6’9. Size aside, the Ducks have out-rebounded their tournament opponents by 21 (76-55 total, 30-21 offensive), while the Wolverines have been out-rebounded by 26 (51-77 total, 11-31 offensive). The Ducks will need to continue to crash the boards without Boucher to get out of this one.
Both teams are blazing the nets from deep during their respective runs. Michigan is shooting around 48 percent (22-of-46) from deep so far this tournament, including going 16-of-29 from distance against Oklahoma State. The Ducks are shooting 41 percent from beyond the arc, having gone 16-of-39 in their first two games.
