College basketball’s wild week saw 60 percent of the AP Top 25 lose

The AP Poll saw 15 of the top 25 teams lose this past week.

This past week reinforced the dominant theme of the college basketball season thus far: there are no great teams, the top squads in the country are all vulnerable and this March is going to be wide open.

A shocking 60 percent of the AP Top 25 lost in the last seven days. Here’s a look back at all the carnage.

1) Michigan State

The Spartans got straight worked by Ohio State on Sunday in their second game as the No. 1 team in the country. MSU remains the heavy favorite in the Big Ten — Purdue looks like their only decent competition — but this game was another reminder there is no true favorite right now in college basketball.

2) Duke

Duke’s defense got cut up again by an uninspiring NC State team. The Blue Devils need to figure out that side of the ball to be a legitimate national title contender. Duke has now lost five straight ACC road games, which is kind of incredible. At least they escaped Raleigh without a moment as iconic as Dennis Smith Jr.’s dunk this time.

4) Arizona State

  • Lost 90-81 in overtime at Colorado

The Sun Devils’ surprise undefeated season ended in Tucson last Saturday in a game that was close until the final seconds. This week started with a game at Colorado, which ASU dropped in overtime, 90-81. Arizona State almost dropped a third straight game on Sunday, by squeaked by Utah by three.

5) Xavier

The Musketeers were downed by Providence on Saturday in an intense Big East game. Next up: a date with Villanova on Wednesday.

7) Oklahoma

  • Lost 89-76 at West Virginia

Trae Young’s magic finally ran out against Jevon Carter and West Virginia. This was Young’s worst game of the season, and he still finished with 29 points (and eight turnovers).

10) Kansas

We told you the Big 12 was no forgone conclusion this year. The Jayhawks nearly lost another game at TCU on Saturday night, but held on for a four-point win. Kansas needs those reinforcements in the front court in a big way.

11) Texas A&M

  • Lost 83-66 vs. Florida
  • Lost 69-68 vs. LSU

Freshman point guard Tremont Waters hit one of the craziest buzzer-beaters of the season to lift the Tigers over Texas A&M on Saturday. That one had to hurt. The Aggies are now 0-3 in the SEC.

12) North Carolina

There are no down years for Virginia, apparently. Holding Carolina under 50 points in an accomplishment any time you can do it. The Tar Heels still look like one of the toughest, most experience teams in the country (and they have shooting now, too) but there’s only so much that can do for you on the road in the ACC.

14) Arizona

  • Lost 80-77 at Colorado

Call Arizona the Buffalo State now. Colorado took out a pair of top-15 teams from the state this week. There’s a lot of parity in the Pac-12 right now.

15) Miami

  • Lost 64-54 at Georgia Tech

Georgia Tech has lost to Grambling, Wofford and Wright State this season, among others. So yeah, Miami probably wishes it had this one back.

16) TCU

  • Lost 88-84 vs. Kansas

The Horned Frogs are legit this year, and they proved it by giving Kansas all it could handle. Kenrich Williams and Jaylen Fischer are as tough as it gets. Jamie Dixon has this program trending in the right direction.

17) Kentucky

  • Lost 76-65 at Tennessee

Kentucky got run out of the gym in the second half against the Vols. When Kevin Knox shoots 1-for-9 from the field, the Wildcats are going to be in trouble.

22) Arkansas

  • Lost 78-75 at Mississippi State
  • Lost 88-77 at Auburn

The SEC is legitimately tough this season. Save your #SECBasketballFever tweets for another year. Here’s guessing the Razorbacks — with a torrid pace of play and a solid veteran backcourt — can still around the conference race all season.

23) Tennessee

  • Lost 94-84 vs. Auburn

That win vs. Kentucky saved the Vols from opening up SEC play with three straight losses.

24) Florida State

  • Lost 80-74 at Miami

FSU shot only 36 percent from the field and 20 percent from three. It doesn’t matter how deep you are — and Seminoles are deep — it’s basically impossible to win an ACC road game shooting like that.
