The No. 1 seed UNC-Greensboro Spartans will not be in the NIT this year as they took down the No. 2 East Tennessee State Buccaneers, 62-47, in the SoCon tournament championship game. This was a revenge game for the Spartans, who lost in the championship game last year to the then-No. 3 seed Buccaneers in a disappointing 79-75 defeat.

UNC-Greensboro just barely made the championship game this time around, beating No. 5 seed Wofford, 56-55, in the semifinals. Wofford had a chance to send the Spartans home but could not do it in the waning seconds of the game.

With all that being said, UNC-Greensboro now gets to bask in the glory of representing the SoCon in the NCAA tournament.

The Stakes

The stakes are pretty simple for this year’s edition of the SoCon tournament. The Spartans, who are favored for the second consecutive season, need just three wins to secure a ticket to the NCAA Tournament. However, they could potentially run into trouble in the championship game again as East Tennessee State is the No. 2 seed this year.

The Format

The SoCon tournament is single elimination, featuring all 10 conference teams. The top two seeds face the winners of the No. 8/No. 9 and No. 7/ No 10 matchups, while the No. 4/No. 5 and No. 3/No. 6 seeds play each other. If you are one of the top six teams, it will take three victories to the capture the crown.
