The Sweet 16 is finally upon us. This year’s NCAA tournament has again taught us to expect the unexpected in March. For proof, look no further than the Sweet 16 matchup between No. 11 Loyola-Chicago Ramblers and No. 7 Nevada Wolf Pack.

These two teams will face off in the South region on Thursday at 7:07 p.m. ET at Phillips Arena in Atlanta. The Ramblers are led by junior guard Clayton Custer, while the Wolf Pack is led by junior forward Caleb Martin.

How did Loyola-Chicago reach the Sweet 16?

The No. 11 seed Ramblers got to the Sweet 16 thanks to clutch plays from their guards. In their first-round matchup against No. 6 Miami (FL), the Ramblers got a game-winning three-pointer from guard Donte Ingram at the top of the key. In their next game against No. 3-seed Tennessee, it was Custer who came up big: He hit a pull-up jump shot in the lane to give Loyola a 63-62 victory.

How did Nevada reach the Sweet 16?

The Wolf Pack won both their games via comeback. In their first-round game against Mo Bamba and the Texas Longhorns, Nevada erased a 14-point deficit in the second half to force overtime. In the extra period, Nevada fell behind by four points, but Caleb Martin scored nine points from three-point range to help his team capture an 87-83 victory.

In their second-round game against No. 2 seed Cincinnati, the Wolf Pack rallied from 22 points to shock the Bearcats, 75-73. Once again, the Martin twins — Caleb and Cody — were instrumental in the victory.

Who are players to watch?

  • Nevada forward Cody Martin: He can make an impact in all phases of the game and showed that against Cincinnati by putting up 25 points, seven assists, and six rebounds.
  • Loyola-Chicago forward Aundre Jackson: While all the attention has been on the heroics of Custer and Ingram, Jackson is averaging 14 points off the bench.

What matchup might decide who advances to the Elite Eight?

The matchup to watch for is Ingram vs. the Martin twins. Ingram is the tallest guard (6’6) in the Ramblers’ starting lineup and will have the tall task of slowing down one of the twins. If he can limit either to 10 points or fewer, then the Ramblers may have a chance of advancing to the Elite Eight.
