College of Charleston makes NCAA Tournament for the first time in 19 years

Championship Week is in full swing and many teams will be punching their tickets to the big dance. Some are fixtures in the NCAA tournament and will be returning to make another tourney run and other teams, like College of Charleston, will get to experience the madness after long droughts.

The Cougars were the No. 1 seed heading into the CAA tournament and defeated No. 2 Northeastern 83-76 in the championship to go to the big dance for the first time in 19 years.

The Cougars came back from a 13-point halftime deficit to send the game into overtime, after scoring 42 in the second half.

The last year the Cougars made the NCAA tournament was 1999, the year before the ‘Y2K bug and when we still had NCAA March Madness video games. Furthermore, in 1999, the Cougars weren’t even a part of the CAA yet. They were playing in the Southern Conference, which looks totally different now.

In the 1998-99 season, the College of Charleston won the SoCon championship game, defeating Appalachian State 77-67. Then, the Cougars were selected as a No. 8 seed in the East Region, where they faced off against the No. 9 seed Tulsa. Tulsa went on to beat Charleston 62-53 to move on to the Round of 32.

Unlike, the 1998-99 Cougars, this year’s team will most likely not be an eighth seed in the NCAA tourney, but they can still make some noise depending on where they land.

Go celebrate Charleston, you deserve it!
