Reggie Chevis Reveals Top Five, Will Take Visits

A Texas linebacker prospect and the SEC seem like a fit.

Perhaps it’s no coincidence that three of the top five teams being considered by Houston (Texas) Sharpstown linebacker Reggie Chevis are in the SEC, which the prospect revealed on Tuesday. After all, Chevis is an SEC-type linebacker at 6’3 and 240 bouncy, reckless pounds.

As many prospects do these days, Chevis took to Twitter to drop that top five:

In regards to the leader, Texas A&M, Chevis had voiced his displeasure about not having spoken with new Aggie head coach Kevin Sumlin ($), but that conversation eventually happened and apparently to the satisfaction of the big linebacker. During the same interview in which Chevis discussed his conversation with Sumlin, the Sharpstown star also revealed that he would have committed to A&M on the spot had he been offered at the Junior Day he attended back in February.

The second team on his list is notable in that Chevis does not have an offer from Alabama. He was evaluated by the Tide during the early part of May, so there’s no question that he’s on the radar. Could it be another ploy to increase interest? It’s certainly a strong declaration of his own interest in the Tide program. Perhaps a slow play is in effect here from Nick Saban as he analyzes his overall numbers.

As for the remainder of the list, Oklahoma is the latest offer for Chevis, but would likely need a visit from the Houston-area prospect to make a move on his list. The fact that the Sooners still trail a team that has yet to offer might well leave Bob Stoops and his staff in a distant third.

There’s been no apparent talk of a timetable for Chevis, so the current plan is to take his official visits in the fall, which may comprise his only trips to campuses like Alabama and Oklahoma. If proximity becomes the ultimate factor, Texas A&M would seem to be the resounding favorite at this time. There’s no question that proximity will play an indirect role, as another school will have to unseat the Aggies without the benefit of multiple times on campus.
