The Texas Longhorns picked up a surprise 15th commitment on early Sunday evening with the pledge of Cibolo Steele safety Erik Huhn, who had been on the fringes of the Texas radar prior to his decision.

In speaking with the Steele offensive coordinator at the state track meet in May, he suggested to Inside Texas recruiting analyst Eric Nahlin and I that Huhn was under serious evaluation by defensive backs coach Duane Akina and one of the top players on the Texas board. However, since Huhn was not a widely publicized attendee at the second Junior Day, his presence firmly on the radar was probably probably underestimated.
In all likelihood, Huhn impressed Akina during in-person evaluations this spring and then further helped his cause with a strong performance at the Sunday camp, though he was not known to be one the attendees prior to his Sunday commitment.
A three-star prospect by Rivals and 247Sports, Scout has Huhn as a four-star recruit. Prior to his Longhorn pledge, he held 12 offers, including Nebraska and Oklahoma.
At 6-2 and 205 pounds, Huhn looked impressive physically at the state track meet and significantly helped his cause with a growth spurt in the last year or so and by working hard in the weight room, as evidenced by the substantial amount of muscle he has added to his frame -- more than 20 pounds.
While Huhn and his Steele teammates benefited from qualifying for the state track meet as a school from San Antonio, the mere fact that he was able to qualify in several events speaks to his athleticism. He has a listed 40 time of 4.53 seconds.

Besides the surprising offer, the major consideration following the pledge is how his addition will impact the rest of the 2013 numbers at defensive back. Florida safety Marcell Harris and Georgia safety Vonn Bell likely still have committable offers, but what about Sugarland Dulles defensive back Maurice Smith, Chandler (AZ) Hamilton cornerback Cole Luke, and Livingston athlete Chevoski Collins, recruited by Texas as a safety?
It’s not yet clear at this time, but HornsNation recruiting analyst Max Olson did tweet on Sunday that Texas may extend an offer to New Orleans (LA) Edna Karr cornerback Noel Ellis following his camp appearance, which would suggest that Texas would still accept a commitment from most of those aforementioned prospects.
