Vanderbilt football recruiting: Commodores keep momentum going

The Commodores are really competing for recruits for the first time under head coach James Franklin, who has Vanderbilt positioned well to be competitive in the SEC.

For decades, Vanderbilt football was terrible, and their recruiting was just as good as their on-field performance. However, under James Franklin, the Commodore program has found new life, and Franklin and his staff have become forces to reckon with on the recruiting trail.

Vanderbilt’s 20-player recruiting class is ranked between 15 and 25 in the major recruiting service rankings and looks like it will set up the Commodores well for the next few years. Here’s a closer look at who will be coming to Nashville in 2013.

Johnathon McCrary: A four-star dual threat quarterback, McCrary just enrolled in Nashville this January. At 6'4, 200 pounds, he has a good frame for a passer and could get in the mix to replace Jordan Rodgers.

Johnathan Ford: Ford chose the Commodores over Tennessee, Mississippi State and Ole Miss, and gives them a strong back to help replace Zac Stacy. At 5’11 and 190 pounds, he has a nice mix of size and speed (4.5 40-yard dash).

Nigel Bowden: A four star inside linebacker from Georgia, Bowden chose Vandy over Arkansas, Georgia Tech, Miami and Ole Miss. He comes to Nashville at 6’1 and 230 pounds, and has good size for patrolling the middle of the field.

Jay Woods: Another Georgia kid, Woods is a 6’3, 275-pound defensive tackle that brings good size to the middle of Vanderbilt’s defensive line. Woods turned down Clemson and Arkansas to go to Vanderbilt.
