Utah football recruiting 2013: Utes building around in-state talent

Utah has earned commitments from several top in-state players, including a solid group from Salt Lake City.

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

The Utah Utes have some work to do in order to catch up with the top recruiting classes in the Pac-12. Utah's 10-member class ranks last in the conference, per the 247Sports composite, and it ranks just 67th nationally.

Most of the Utes’ verbals came relatively early, though the school did pick up a pledge from three-star defensive tackle Pita Tonga in September. Tonga, who is from Salt Lake City, became the seventh member of the class from the state of Utah.

Here are a few of the Utes’ top prospects:

Jackson Barton is a consensus four-star offensive tackle from Brighton High School in Salt Lake City. The Utes have earned verbals from a handful of the state’s top-10 players, and Barton is one of them. He is considered the No. 17 tackle in the class, and the 236th-best player overall.

Kenyon Frison is from Granger High School, also in Salt Lake City. The three-star offensive tackle is regarded as the 32nd-best player at his position and ranks 389th overall.

Tonga, as mentioned, is another hometown get for the Utes. It took him less than two weeks to commit once he received a scholarship offer in late August. He is considered the 37th-best defensive tackle in the class as well as the No. 471 overall player in 2014.
