Georgia Tech recruiting 2013: Jackets’ class grows to 18 in September

The Yellow Jackets have 18 commitments in their 2014 class, but it’s a group that is somewhat light on star power, and it ranks just 40th nationally, according to the 247Sports composite. It is also considered the ninth-best class within the ACC.

Georgia Tech has received a few verbals in September, the most recent of those coming from consensus three-star offensive guard prospect Gary Brown. Three-star center Jake Whitley committed early in the month, as did Andrew Marshall, who is also a three-star center prospect.

“Three-star prospect” is a phrase that can get worn out describing this group -- literally every verbal the Jackets have is a consensus three-star prospect according to the 247Sports composite, though there are of course varying degrees to that designation.

Some highlights from the class:

Jacksonville (Fla.) Atlantic Coast High School cornerback Stepheny Durham is the most well-regarded player among Tech’s group of three-star recruits. Durham is regarded as the No. 33 player at his position nationally and the 383rd-best overall prospect in the 2014 class.

Linebacker KeShun Freeman, who hails from Hogansville (Ga.) Callaway High School, is another top player in the Jackets’ class. Freeman is the 50th-best outside linebacker prospect in the country, per the 247 composite, and the 677th-best prospect overall.

Goose Creek (S.C.) Goose Creek High School running back Caleb Kinlaw picked Georgia Tech over in-state powers Clemson and South Carolina, among others. Kinlaw is a consensus top-50 player at his position and a top-20 player in the state of South Carolina.

The aforementioned Marshall, who is from Cumming (Ga.) West Forsyth High School, is the No. 11 center in the 2014 class and the No. 69 overall prospect from the state of Georgia.
